Prayer Rug, Arabic sajjāda, Persian namāzlik, one of the major types of rug produced in central and western Asia, used by Muslims primarily to cover the bare ground or floor while they pray. Prayer rugs are characterized by the prayer niche, or mihrab, an arch-shaped design at one end of the carpet. The mihrab, which probably derives from the prayer niche in mosques, must point toward Mecca while the rug is in use.

Ritual purity is extremely important for Muslim prayers practices. As Islamic studies scholar Marion Katz explains, mosque carpets provide a protective layer between the worshiper and the ground, protecting the clothing from anything on ground that is polluting.

A Mosque Mihrab is marks the wall that Muslims face to pray towards Mecca. Concave mihrabs and two dimensional, or flat mihrabs are the most common.

The concave mihrab creates a niche in the qibla face that magnifies and bounces sound back, thus creating an acoustic device as well as a focal point used for submission in prayer. Flat mihrabs, with the purpose of more private devotion, disperse sound. Although both flat and concave mihrabs give the illusion of directionality in mosques today, they have a complex history about their purpose and how they came to be prominent features in prayer.
